Dating native Pensacola
The sites of these Native American tribes in Florida tell a story that no history book can recount. The morning breeze has all but died on this warm May morning and I stop along the Memorial Trail on De Soto Point for a quick drink of cold bottled water. Most weekends, the Manatee River is crowded with watercraft - sail, motor and human-powered - as local residents and tourists alike use this waterway for easy access to the Gulf of Mexico.
Our earliest information of value concerning any of the people of this coast is contained in the relation of Cabeza de Vaca, who encountered them in on his way westward from the Apalachee country by sea with the remains of the Narvaez expedition. Although none of the tribes which the explorers met is mentioned by name there is every reason to believe that one of them was the Pensacola. He says:. In the survivors of the Narvaez expedition had an encounter with Indians near Pensacola Bay who probably belonged to this tribe. Through the adoption of their name first for that of Pensacola Bay and secondly for the port which grew up upon it, the Pensacola have attained a fame entirely disproportionate to the aboriginal importance of the tribe.
